History of Sabha

The Mahara Pradeshiya Sabha’s jurisdiction is bounded by Ja Ala, Wattala, Kelaniya Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the West, Atthanagalla and Dompe Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the East, Gampaha Divisional Secretariat Division in the North, and Byagama Divisional Secretariat Division in the South. This division with a size of 98.3 squre kilo meter consists of 92 G.N divisions. The total population of this division is 216763. Most of the population in this area is Sinhalese, and there are also Tamils, Muslims and Burghers among them. Paddy, coconut and rubber are the main economic crops of this division and the total area of paddy cultivation is 1298 hectares, coconut cultivation is done in 7891 hectares and rubber cultivation is spread over 323 acres. Minor export crops are grown, in addition to animal husbandry. The Mahara Pradeshiya Sabha jurisdiction is divided into 92 Grama Niladari domains, and even if considered as local government boundaries, this division belongs to the Mahara Pradeshiya Sabha’s jurisdiction. The constituency also becoms Mahara constituency as well. In addition, this area is also of historical importance. Some of the places of historical importance are Walagamba Rajamaha Vihara, Pirkuttutu Rajamaha Vihara, Maligathanna Viveka Senasana, Vebada Temple, Warapalana Tempita Statue. The stone carvings of human beings who lived 30,000 years ago can be seen around Raja Maha Viharaya. Inscriptions with Brahmi characters have been found in those ancient caves. Danaukanda is a famous meditation center. Isigilikanda is a temple located on a scenic hilltop. It also has a Yogashram.
